Torrential
rains continue to pour all over Pakistan,
causing flooding and swelling of rivers. Even
more rains are upcoming as next phase of
monsoon; While the official death toll remains
below 2,000 thus far - well below the 2004
Tsunami, 2005 Pakistan and 2010 Haiti
earthquakes - the aftermath in terms of people
affected far
surpasses those of all these three disasters
combined, let alone the property lossess, loss
of livelihoods and agriculture, combined with
the water borne diseases outbreak.
UN
estimates put recovery costs in the
billions. Above
Fourteen million
people have been rendered homeless in the past
weeks,
and no doubt more will be left without anything
in the near future.
On a recent visit to the country by UN Secretary
General Ban ki Moon, he appealed for the
international community to do much more to help
Pakistan meet the basic requirements in
providing shelter, food and medicine to the
affected population. Nearly
one in ten Pakistanis has been affected directly
by this disaster.
With hottest summer during the holy month of
Ramadan, those affected face tough times ahead. They
need our help now more than ever.
Again at the time of this disaster, HRDN is also
contributing its share through Relief, Recovery
and Rehabilitation of the affected people. This
all could be possible with the support of HRDN
members and friends of HRDN. The efforts and
progress so far is shared with you;
